What Experts are saying about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) usually occurs after a traumatic or terrifying lifethreatening event in which serious physical or emotional harm occurs or is threatened. PTSD was first recognized after the Vietnam War, during which time the disorder was often referred to as “combat fatigue”. Families of victims or first responders can also be affected by this disorder. But other events can also trigger PTSD . What causes PTSD in one person may not in someone else. For example, in some people PTSD may be triggered by the loss of a person, or multiple losses in a short period, such as through death, illness or divorce.

Some of the reactions to post-traumatic stress include: reliving the traumatic event,
including flashbacks, hallucinations and/or nightmares, avoiding any associations with
the event ( including events that may have been enjoyable prior to the trauma),
increased arousal, or hypersensitivity to normal life experiences. PTSD can cause
depression and a lot of anxiety and effect negatively those around you. It can be hard
to engage in daily living.
